October 10th is recognised as World Mental Health Day and, despite improvements in how we as a society have destigmatised the way that we discuss and deal with our mental health, there is still a long way to go in ensuring that help is there when people need it, especially for those within the LGBTQ+ community.
In a 2018 report, Stonewall found that;
- 1 in 8 LGBTQ+ people experience unequal treatment from healthcare staff.
- 1 in 7 LGBTQ+ people avoid seeking treatment due to a fear of discrimination.
- 1 in 8 LGBTQ+ people aged between 18-24 had attempted to take their life.
- Half of LGBTQ+ people had experienced depression, and 3 in 5 had experienced anxiety.
If you, or anyone you know is feeling low, communities like Rainbow Blades and SAYiT are there to offer an ear to listen. Remember to check on your mate, partner, whoever it is if you think they might be struggling. Don't ever think you're on your own, someone will be there to help, and someone will listen, even if you think nobody wants to.
