January is a time of new beginnings. We start the year with good intentions, resolving to eat more fresh food, hit the gym three times a week or learn to speak another language. Yet more often than not, by the end of the month resolutions made in good faith have fallen by the wayside. Change can be a challenge.
United also had a new beginning recently, welcoming Chris Wilder back as manager. The reappointment made me consider how his previous success impacted the reception he received from the fanbase and the players. Of course, changes were made during his time away, but there were still familiar faces in the dressing room on his return. Bramall Lane was still Bramall Lane. It was a new beginning, but not a blank slate.
For members of the LGBTQ+ community, coming out is the biggest of new beginnings - a chance to live as our authentic selves. When we come out our slates are not blank but they do have space for a future full of possibilities - much like United's.
