Today's Rainbow Blades column comes from committee member Katey.
Did you know that October is Black History Month? Originating in America in the 1920s, the UK adopted the celebration in 1987.
As well as embracing the diverse culture and heritage of Black people, the month recognises how the achievements of Black people have historically been overlooked or downplayed.
Rainbow Blades recognises the importance of championing diversity, as do Sheffield United. Did you know Ghanaian-born goalie Arthur Wharton, widely regarded as the first professional black footballer, played for the Blades in the 1890s?
Of course, there have been many Black players who have excelled in the red and white stripes. Club favourites such as Brian Deane and Tony Agana are rightly deemed legends and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk's contribution to Sheffield United Women means she will always be held in high regard at Bramall Lane. Steve Kabba scored a number of memorable goals for United (including against our cross-city rivals) and David McGoldrick won the hearts of supporters with his passion and skill as the club won promotion to the Premier League.
Who are your favourite Black United players? Share with us via our account on X (@Rainbow_Blades) and let's celebrate them this Black History Month.
